FEARS have been raised over the future of a planned new path designed to keep pedestrians and cyclists safe.
A year ago, the Welsh Government announced it had made nearly £200,000 available to Gwynedd Council to improve the cycle/footpath network in Porthmadog, especially around the Britannia Bridge.
The money was to be used to link a stretch of the path between the Cob and the path near the former tax office building in the town.
However, one year later no work has been completed.
Town councillor Jason Humphreys, who fought hard for the scheme when he was county councillor, said: “The project was delayed in the past because of Japanese Knotweet. As this matter was resolved and since the council has had plenty of time in the intervening period to seal things with the land owners, I find it inexplicable that the project wasn’t completed last autumn as promised.
“We need solid assurances that this project will be completed before the grant funding is lost.”
The council has since said that they hope work will be underway in the “near future”.
Meurig Owen Rowlands, CSM Madog cycling club, believed that the new link would encourage the next generation of cyclists.
When asked when the work would be done, a Gwynedd spokesperson said: “Discussions are ongoing with the landowners and we hope that work will be able to get underway in the near future.”
