THE Welsh Government is to review a previous decision not to provide a pedestrian crossing at an “extremely dangerous” section of road into Aberystwyth.

A review of safety across Wales’ trunk roads in 2015 found no need for a crossing on the A487 at Southgate, where two busy community facilities, Neuadd Goffa and St Anne’s Church, sit on opposite sides of the road, the Welsh Government said.

But following a campaign by Penparcau councillor Lorrae Jones-Southgate and Ceredigion MP Mark Williams, the Welsh Government has said it will revisit its decision as part of a review this summer.

Cllr Jones-Southate is calling for a pelican crossing — with traffic lights, zig-zag lines and a pedestrian button system — to be introduced following the success of another such system in Penparcau.

It was revealed in the Cambrian News last week that Mr Williams had written to the Welsh minister for transport, Ken Skates AM, after himself receiving complaints from residents.

A Welsh Government spokesperson told the Cambrian News: “We completed a review of speed limits and community safety across the trunk road network in 2015.

“Whilst evidence considered at that time did not support the need to change the speed limit or provide a crossing at this location, a review of this decision is planned for this summer. The community’s concerns will be taken into account as part of this process.”
