There’s “no such thing” as being both Welsh and British, a councillor has said, adding that “people need to choose”.
The comments were made at Gwynedd Council’s Language Committee meeting this week.
They were discussing the draft Welsh in Education Strategic Plan that sets out the authority’s target of more children being educated through the medium of Welsh, with calls made for more Welsh medium secondary schools, rather than bilingual.
During the debate, committee member Cllr Elfed Williams said: “This bilingualism has bugged me for some time, for me people need make a decision and we need to be forthright in choosing Welsh.
“It’s the same as someone saying they’re both Welsh and British, there’s no such thing, people need to choose rather than sit on the fence.”
The newly elected committee chair also spoke of his concern Welsh was “being hidden behind bilingualism”.
Cllr Alwyn Gruffydd said: “It’s about time that we had specifically Welsh schools in Gwynedd, we aren’t going to stand our ground in terms of the language unless we do so.
“So if a decision is made that all subjects are offered only in Welsh then people know where they stand, and there lies the answer."
