A petition to save one of Tywyn’s historic buildings has been signed by almost 1,300 people.

Glyn Evans launched a petition to ask Gwynedd Council to buy the Corbett Arms hotel, a building steeped in history.

Once visited by John Lennon, the hotel is a Georgian, Grade II listed building.

Glyn’s petition has attracted over 1,297 signatures so far.

Speaking to the Cambrian News, Glyn said: "The deep sentiment in the town is such that they wish to save the building before it’s too late."

Tywyn town councillor Anne Lloyd-Jones said: "I support any action taken to help the Corbett Arms. I would love to see something done there. During its prime I used to visit two or three times a week.

"It’s not just locals who are saddened by the place. When visitors come to Tywyn who remember the hotel in its prime they ask what happened.”

Meurig Jones of Portmeirion visited the Corbett Arms often.

He said: "I have such fond memories of attending functions there all my life, and it was always a wonderful place to go and meet friends.

"I am very pleased that this campaign has been created, and I will be doing everything I can to help it reach a good and positive conclusion."

A Gwynedd Council spokesperson said: “We are aware of the situation and the concerns locally regarding this listed building.

“A compulsory purchase order would only be considered when there is a specific concern regarding the condition of the building and an unwillingness to take action on behalf of the building owner.

“However, council planning enforcement and conservation officers will continue to monitor the situation.”
