ABERYSTWYTH councillors will seek assurances from contractors before accepting “substantial changes” to plans for a new skatepark.

Plans for Parc Kronberg skatepark and community area are being finalised by contractors after the town council’s successful bid for £440,000 of funding from the Big Lottery in October.

And Freestyle, the skatepark design and construction firm contracted by the Ceredigion County Council, which is acting as the town council’s agent, have written to the town council seeking approval for “non-material amendments” to the designs before they are submitted.

At a full meeting of Aberystwyth Town Council last week, mayor Cllr Brendan Somers said: “The contractor is requesting ‘non-material amendments’ and the town council need to determine if they are happy prior to it being submitted by Freestyle.”

But Cllr Mererid Boswell, who was instrumental in the successful funding bid, has warned against accepting the amendments until they have been fully considered, and reassurances about the scope of the changes have been secured from Freestyle.

“I would say that this is a substantial change to the plan because it changes the plan which was put into the Big Lottery,” said Cllr Boswell, née Jones.

"I would suggest we do not pass plans for the time being, until we have prices and are clear on the reasons why the changes have been made.

“The danger is that we agree to a scheme which is much less than the original one."
