ABERYSTWYTH Town Council has supported an application to turn a 12-bedroom house into six flats.

Councillors heard that Natural Resources Wales were opposed to a planning application, submitted by Mr and Mrs E and M Owen, to convert a house of multiple occupancy (HMO) at 15 South Marine Terrace into six flats because of concerns over flooding. But some councillors questioned what difference it would make given the building would be in the same location as before.

“The applicants want to turn it into flats but there is an objection by NRW,” Cllr Jeff Smith, chair of the planning committee, told town councillors.

“They say that the level of the house is lower than the prom and don’t feel it would cope with flooding and they are very much against this.”

Cllr Talat Chaudhri asked: “Is it a problem at present?”

Councillors voted to support the application but stipulated that the applicant should follow NRW advice on preventing flooding.
