THE sale of Aberystwyth’s former library has fallen through because of problems connected with its listed building status, the Cambrian News can reveal.

The buyer behind a scheme to turn the building on Corporation Street into two “high-end” apartments pulled the plug after a “number of issues” were identified during talks with heritage body Cadw.

Estate agent Charles Raw-Rees told the Cambrian News the building is now back up for sale following the withdrawal by the unnamed buyer.

Contracts were exchanged between the buyer and Ceredigion council on the property, subject to planning and listed building consent.

“As a listed building, Cadw got involved and there were certain issues that the purchaser couldn’t agree to,” Mr Raw-Rees said.

“He was not prepared to proceed with some of the requirements Cadw wanted to impose.

“It is unfortunate but we’re now inviting expressions of interest. There was plenty of interest initially from a range of people including developers, private buyers and community groups so we are hopeful.”

The building, closed in 2012 when the library moved to its current home in the town hall, now has outline planning permission for two three-bedroom flats – granted by Ceredigion council earlier this year.
