A BYPASS of Machynlleth as part of the plans for a new Dyfi Bridge would result in the town missing out on visitors, a councillor has warned.

Current plans for the new bridge do not involve any proposals for a bypass at Machynlleth and have been supported by Machynlleth town councillors

But Tywyn Town Council has called on the Welsh Government to abandon the proposed scheme and build a bridge closer to Tywyn and create a bypass for Machynlleth.

Cllr Michael Williams said he would be opposed to any bypass for Machynlleth.

Cllr Williams said: “All I can say is that when businesses and other representatives met with Edwina Hart three or four years ago at the Owain Glyndwr Centre and the matter of a bypass was mentioned, there was only one person in favour of any sort of bypass. Nobody else was in favour. I’d rather see people come into the town and have an opportunity to see what businesses there are, have a meal or a cup of tea.

“If there is a bypass people will just carry on until they reach a bigger town.”

Tywyn Town Council claims that the current bridge proposal would not address issues such as flooding or congestion in Machynlleth and are concerned about road safety at a proposed junction for traffic going to and coming from Tywyn.
