A CAR park created by the county council on the outskirts of Aberystwyth for use while Tesco and Marks & Spencer was being built has now been fenced off, sparking calls for houses to be built on the site.
The old brewery land in Trefechan had been leased by the council to provide an alternative car park while construction work on the Mill Street development was taking place.
But, following the opening of the new car park in Mill Street, the council terminated the lease on the Trefechan land, believed to be owned by local businessman Stephen Woods, and the area has now been fenced off.
Local councillor Aled Davies said he hoped the land could be used for a mixed housing development when plans are drawn up.

“I would not want it to stay like this for too long, but I would rather time is taken to develop the site in a manner that is beneficial to the local community and with full consultation with the residents of this area.
“I would like a mixed development that has housing for young families, the elderly and young people, with as much recreational space as possible.”
A council spokesperson confirmed that the authority had terminated the lease as the land was not needed as a car park any more.
