Plans to turn a dancefloor area at a Cardigan hotel into a bowling alley has been approved by county planners.
A change of use application was submitted to Ceredigion County Council in August for the proposed use of a former dance floor at Cardigan’s Grade-II-listed Angel Hotel, St Mary Street as a bowling alley.
Documents said the plan will see the removal of the former dance floor and “installation of four bowling alleys within the existing open-plan space.”
The bowling facility is proposed to be available to both hotel guests and the general public.
In documents submitted with the application, owners said the “objective of the development would be to utilise the space in an effective manner with a viable and attractive use that would sustain the business and in turn the maintenance of the wider building.”
“The space replaced a former dance floor wing, completed circa 2011 and operated for a number of years as a large dancefloor with bar adjoining the hotel,” documents added.
“Changes in night time economy reduced the demand for such a space and as such a space of the size available is no longer required.”
Approving the plans, planning officers said in a report that “while the bowling alley would result in customers coming and going throughout the day, the level and pattern of activity would be compatible with the town centre location and the previous leisure and entertainment use of this part of the building.”
“Public Protection notes that the building already benefits from acoustic insulation associated with its previous use as a nightclub and, having regard to the level of noise associated with that previous use, does not consider that the proposal is likely to result in an intensification of sound transmission to nearby residential accommodation,” the report added.
“However, it is acknowledged that the character of the noise would change, with bowling likely to generate more impulsive and structure-borne impact noise.
“Public Protection raises no objection subject to a condition controlling noise from the operation of the bowling alley.”
The plan, which was supported by Cardigan Town Council, was approved subject to conditions by council planners under delegated powers earlier this month.
