THE president of the students’ union at Aberystwyth University wants to turn the town’s defunct RAFA Club into a late-night bar, the Cambrian News can reveal.

Lewis Donnelly has lodged an application for a premises licence with Ceredigion Council for the new venue which would be called Bar46.

The plan for the Bridge Street building is to open between 10am and 2am from Sunday to Thursday and between 10am and 3am on Friday and Saturday. The licence application is for alcohol, live and recorded music and dancing.

The building has been empty since the RAFA Club closed in 2013.

The Royal Air Force Association decided to sell it after three years of financial losses.

Bar46 Ltd was only incorporated on 22 January and has j

ust two listed directors, Stuart and Sian Stephens, from Porth in Glamorgan. But Mr Donnelly confirmed that he and his partner were involved in the scheme.

He said: “At this point it’s still very much in the pipeline with plenty to do.

“The application has been sent off under the name of Bar46, but we are still at very early stages.”

As part of a consultation period, local residents have until 15 March to object.

Local councillor Ceredig Davies said there had been complaints from residents in the past about noise levels at the building.

And he added: “It is of concern to nearby residents that should the venue be granted a licence, that once again their quality of life will suffer.”Mr Donnelly wanted to make it clear that it was a personal venture and nothing to do with the students' union.
