A family with two disabled children will be get £130,000 from the council to help build a new and suitably adapted home.

Cabinet approval was required for the contribution because it was for a new build and not adaptation of their existing home so the final sign-off could not be done by the disabled grants panel.

Cllr Dafydd Edwards told members that the authority had been dealing with the family for several years and there was a need to support them.

An allocation for the family has been ring-fenced since 2014, a report to Cabinet states, but last year an existing offer was withdrawn as the planned adaptations were not progressing.

The new plan does not fall into the Disabled Facilities Grants guidelines but a request is being made to reconsider and use the capital expenditure programme.

It is projected to cost £1 million to build plus equipment costs.

“I want to propose that we keep to the sum decided last time we dealt with this, £130,000," said Cllr Edwards.

“It would keep them in the home because that’s better for the children.”

Cllr Catherine Hughes added: “It’s the children here that matter. We have a mother who wants to do the best for her children and keep them at home.”

Cabinet approved the contribution.
