ABERYSTWYTH Town Council has continued its policy of objecting to English-only signs – this time targeting a charity for “disregarding the needs of the Welsh-speaking population”.

Councillors have objected to plans by the British Red Cross for new signs on the outside of its shop on the corner of Terrace Road and North Parade.

The town council has previously called for the new M&S store on the Mill Street development to have its Foodhall brand translated into Welsh on the exterior sign – a row which saw the supermarket giant elect to not install any sign at all.

Earlier this year, the council objected to English-only signs at the proposed new store for Home Bargains on the Ystwyth Retail Park in the former Budgens store.

Those plans were approved by council officers despite the town council’s protests that there was no Welsh translation on the exterior signs.

There is currently no law forcing a business in Wales to have fully bilingual exterior signage, while companies are adamant that trademarked names cannot be translated.

Such laws are in place for public bodies, and Aberystwyth Town Council argues that as the charity receives funding from the Welsh Government and local authorities in Wales, it should have to “adhere to the same bilingual policies”.
