ANOTHER major national retailer with plans to open a store in Aberystwyth could face a battle with councillors over the lack of Welsh in its sign.

Home Bargains, which sells a range of goods in its 400 stores nationwide, including food, furniture, entertainment and electronic items, is hoping to take over the Ystwyth Retail Park store vacated by Budgens.

However, town councillors have opposed the proposed signage because it is not bilingual, and is internally lit.

Presenting the application to the town council, which is a statutory consultee and does not have the power to block applications, Cllr Lucy Huws said: “They want to change the signs.

“They want it to be internal lighting and it is not bilingual.”

Cllr Talat Chaudhri said: “We don’t support signage with internal lighting, and we must follow what we have done previously – everything has to be bilingual.”

Councillors voted to object to the plans.

The council told the Cambrian News last week that a full planning application was not required as the current use falls within the same use class – A1 Retail – as for the Budgens operation.
