TOWN councillors have questioned a condition change in the Aberystwyth Aldi planning application which would allow demolition work to be carried out at night.

It was reported in the Cambrian News earlier this month that Aldi was still planning to go ahead with the development at the site of the old Kwik Save and Cambrian Garage on Boulevard St Brieuc, despite fears the development had been scrapped because a deal with a hotel chain for the upper floors had fallen through.

At a meeting of Aberystwyth Town Council, councillors heard a number of conditions which developers had applied to change retrospectively on the original application approved in April 2011.

They included the right to conduct demolition work in the middle of the night.

Chair of the planning committee Cllr Jeff Smith said: “The developers would like to change several conditions on the application.

“First, the condition to begin work within five years of having the planning application approved.

“Second and third, they want to change the condition which asks them to give details of use before demolition begins, and they want to be able to demolish without having to give details of what it will look like.

“They don’t want to give details of how the sewage system would be done.

“And finally, they want an exception which would allow them to demolish buildings in the middle of the night if they wish."
