THE FRONT of a house in an Aberystwyth conservation area could be altered, despite objections from the town council.

County council planning officers had recommended an applicant be allowed to change the frontage of North Road property, Trefdraeth, a semi-detached Victorian house divided into three flats over four floors, by building a new ground-floor doorway on the building.

Planning officer Owain Davies told a planning committee meeting last week that the applicant, Mrs N Davies, was trying to solve a problem where occupants of the top two floors’ flats have to pass through one flat to reach their own apartments. Mrs Davies’ solution was to divide flat one into two flats, one on the ground floor and one on the first floor, with the creation of a new entrance at the front to give a separate access to the upper floors.

Planning committee member and Aberystwyth town councillor, Mark Strong objected to the plan on the grounds it would be detrimental to the conservation area.

Cllr Strong said: “The town council has objected because of their concerns over the effect on the conservation area. Two neighbours have also objected.”

The objections of neighbours related to fears over lack of parking, noise, over-development, and impact upon the character of the area and residential amenities.”
