A hotel which suffered “extensive” damage and was forced to close after a devastating fire ripped through a neighbouring hotel will be rebuilt under new plans.
The owner of the Belle Vue Hotel on Marine Terrace, Vince Morgans, has applied for permission to rebuild the roof and walls of the Grade II listed building.
Parts of the hotel were gutted after a fire ravaged the Ty Belgrave House Hotel next door in July last year.
The Belle Vue Hotel has been unable to function since the incident at the Belgrave, which saw one man die and Damion Harris, 31, sentenced to 16 years in jail for manslaughter.
Owners have now vowed to rebuild the Belle Vue, with extensive work set to be carried out on the north side of the building adjoining the now demolished Belgrave.
A report into the plans said: “At present the hotel cannot function due to the structural condition along with extensive fire and smoke damage.”
The application seeks permission for a new roof and chimney, replacement of windows, rebuilding walls and rerendering.
“All works are sympathetic to the existing and historic elevations of the building,” the report added.
“Internally the fire has caused extensive damage to plaster walls and these must be replaced”
The plans also include the introduction of en-suites in some rooms once structural work has been completed.
“The actual extent of external alterations to the building is minimal,” the report said.
“It repairs and replaces structures damaged by fire, but is identical to what was there previously.”
Aberystwyth Town Council said it “welcomed” the application “provided that all woodwork, plaster mouldings, doors, fire doors, and all other materials replicate the originals”.
