AN Aberystwyth housing development at the site of the former Tabernacle Chapel has been delayed again and will not be completed until September at the earliest.

The development of 22 flats at the site has already seen significant delays, but Mid Wales Housing Association has confirmed that the scheme has hit another setback with problems with suppliers of steel structures for the interior of the buildings.

That has led to criticism from people waiting to move into the flats and from local residents in the Mill Street area.

Completion of the scheme, which received funding of more than £330,000 from the Welsh Government and support from Ceredigion County Council, had been delayed by the collapse of initial contractors Vallis FM in June 2016, but Sian Howells, the director of new business at MWHA, admitted an earlier estimate that the scheme would be completed by spring this year had been hit by another delay.

She said: “Since last reported, work has been progressing on the site at the Tabernacle and the association has recently completed all drainage and utility connections to the scheme prior to erecting scaffolding to access and finish off the internal works outstanding to the higher level flats.

“Unfortunately, there have been continued delays with the steel fabrication that necessitated the association changing from the previous fabricator to another supplier.

“This vital element of the project is now progressing well but regrettably the overall effect has been to delay the predicted completion of the scheme until September 2017.”
