ANGRY Machynlleth town councillors have unanimously backed a vote of no confidence in Powys council in the latest row over plans for an extended traveller site.
The town council has hit out at Powys council’s handling of the process of establishing the site, saying they no longer believe the county council’s claims - and insisting the people of this town have been done “a great disservice”.
The war of words was sparked after Powys council claimed that officers had not offered guarantees that a full public consultation into the plan would be held, despite town councillors insisting that assurances were given at the October meeting of the town council.
Town councillors also demanded that the county council withdraw the planning application for the site until a consultation is held, questioning whether Powys council even has the legal right to apply for permission to develop a site which is on common land.
Cllr Rhydian Mason said he was unhappy at Powys Council’s handling of the situation. He said: “Cllr Glenda Jenkins used the phrase ‘fait accompli’ in November and, the longer things go on, the more I think that is what they wanted all along.
“I always thought they were here to represent us and all the other towns and parishes in the community, but I’m not getting that feeling from them at the moment.”
