PLANS to seek a developer to transform a prime site in Aberystwyth have been put on the back boiler by the county council because of parking concerns.
The council has identified the former Arriva bus depot in Park Avenue as a possible location for a major development and has included it in council plans to boost economic development in both Aberystwyth and Ceredigion as a whole.
But after failing to attract a developer with an acceptable proposal when initially asking for expressions of interest, the council has now confirmed it is delaying the search so that a review of how the Mill Street development has affected parking patterns in Aberystwyth can take place first.
A council spokesperson said: “Ceredigion County Council will be undertaking a car parking review to assess the impact of the Mill Street development on future short and long stay parking in Aberystwyth town.
“As the outcome of this review may have a bearing on the Arriva site, it is considered prudent to hold on the marketing of the site for the time being.”
Aberystwyth councillor Ceredig Davies said he understood that it may be difficult to find developers and companies prepared to commit to a large development under the current economic climate, but said he had called on the council to open up the Arriva site to provide additional parking in the town when the funfair comes to Aberystwyth shortly to help make up for the loss of parking.
