Ceredigion County Council will apply for funding for a £300,000 project to create a 600-metre path in Lampeter with an area for market stalls in the square.
The Lampeter Green Corridor scheme would create a path linking the Pont Steffan Business Park, the town’s Co-op store and Trinity Saint David University. It is thought the path would cost around £100,000.
The Market Street scheme would see on-street parking removed and trees planted, creating small bay areas that could be used for market stalls, and is estimated to cost around £200,000.
The plans will be put forward for grant funding, despite concerns from Cllr Hag Harris about the loss of on-street parking in the town’s Market Street.
The plans were put before the council Cabinet, and Cllr Rhodri Evans, the economy and regeneration Cabinet member, praised the idea.
“It’s going to be good for Lampeter and good for the environment too. It’s good we can invest in our towns,” he said.
Local councillor Ivor Williams said fellow councillor Hag Harris had raised some concerns about the loss of the parking on Market Street, but he thought that there was adequate parking facilities nearby and that the developments would be a bonus for the town.
The Cabinet will now bid for a share of a £5m Welsh Government grant scheme for the Green Corridor scheme.
