TALKS look set to continue between Ceredigion County Council planners and a social housing landlord over controversial plans for new flats near Aberystwyth harbour.

Wales and West Housing Association already has outline planning permission for new flats at Plas Morolwg but the scheme has attracted criticism from local residents and town councillors.

After a site inspection panel at the end of March, councillors called for further negotiations to overcome concerns, especially about the height of the building and the impact it will have on the visual amenity of the area.

The proposed development involves a four-storey block containing seven apartments and an extra care facility.

The application is due to go before the council’s development control committee tomorrow, with a recommendation that a decision should be deferred to allow further negotiations.

The head of lifestyle services has been given the power to approve an “acceptable scheme”.

A report for the committee said that local councillor Endaf Edwards had raised concerns over the height of the proposed building and whether it would fit in with surrounding properties.

Local residents had also said they were concerned about the height and a possible loss of privacy, as well as the impact the development could have on traffic and an access road.

The report said members of the site inspection panel had agreed that more discussions were needed.
