THE turf has been cut on the ambitious Parc Kronberg project after years of waiting and delays.

Following Aberystwyth Town Council’s success in getting funding from the Big Lottery Fund for the £550,000 project, which has been several years in the making, work has now begun on the site.

The work is expected to be completed before the end of the summer.

The plan will see the site along Boulevard St Brieuc developed, with the existing Kronberg skatepark and adjoining area turned into a public space for the whole community and a state-of-the-art skatepark.

The turf-cutting ceremony was held on Wednesday, 14 June, and was attended by Cllr Steve Davies, the mayor of Aberystwyth, and Aberystwyth councillor Alun Williams representing the town and county council; Cllr Mair Benjamin, town councillor for Rheidol Ward; Andrew Ginn from Ceredigion County Council, who is managing the build process; Jack Micklewright from designers Freestyle, and Andy Williams representing Hultons, the landscaping and construction contractor.

Cllr Davies said: “The council is so grateful to the Big Lottery Fund to enable this project to happen and is now delighted that the work is actually starting.

“It is unfortunate that some key players were unable to be here today such as Danny Giles and Guy Jones, who have provided key input into the design from a community perspective; Gareth Lewis, retired architect, who has contributed his expertise at a crucial stage and of course; Mererid Boswell who has been instrumental in developing the bid.

“However, we are grateful to all partners who have contributed to the development process and we look forward to providing a wonderful facility for Aberystwyth by the end of the summer.”
