PLANS to demolish a multi-million-pound home and replace it with a glass-fronted three-storey property have been given the green light on appeal.
Gwynedd Council refused the original plans to demolish 100-year-old The Shanty on Benar Head in Abersoch - which was purchased for £2.2m back in 2016 - and replace it with an ultra-modern home.
Raise Architects announced this week they obtained planning permission after appealing to the Welsh Government planning inspectorate.
According to the architects, working on behalf of applicant Nigel Andrews: “The proposed dwelling comprises three levels of free-form accommodation totalling an area of 445sqm, each level with access to an external terrace.
“The floors step back on plan to follow the profile of the hill above the cliffs.
“With curved walls of glass doors and slate cladding, the plan form relates to the unusual topography of the site while offering panoramic views of the North Wales coast. Green roofs on the upper levels ensure the building is discrete when viewed from above and has minimal impact on the skyline of the headland.”
Randal Turner, director of Raise Architects, said: “This is a unique and exciting site. Being so prominent, however, it inevitably attracted some concern among the councillors at committee but we have taken great care over the proposals and the planners have always been in support of the design.”
