A PLAQUE commemorating road developments at Llanbedrog during the 1920s has been restored thanks to funding from Gwynedd Council’s Llyn Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Fund.
The engraved words on the slate plaque on the A499 Pwllheli to Abersoch road near the Glyn y Weddw junction have been repainted as part of the project.
Engraved on the plaque are the words: ‘Cynghor Sirol Arfon, Lledwyd ac unionwyd y ffordd hon oddi yma i Frynteg, a gwnaed y rhan newydd oddiyma at Lôn Bribwll gan y Cynghor Sirol. Agorwyd gan CH Lloyd Edwards Ysw. Y.H, Nanhoron 7fed Mawrth 1929.’ (translated: Arfon County Council. This road was widened and straightened from this point to Brynteg, and the new part was made from this point to Lôn Bribwll by the County Council. Opened by CH Lloyd Edwards Esq. J.P, Nanhoron, 7th March 1929).
Previously, the main road from Pwllheli led towards the church and the beach and then up the hill towards the Glyn y Weddw public house, before turning left to Abersoch or straight ahead through the village towards Aberdaron.
The hill made it difficult for horses pulling heavy loads and, as a result the assistance of an additional horse was provided by Owen Williams, of Tanrallt.
