BRITISH Transport Police are seeking witnesses after passengers on an Aberystwyth to Birmingham train were subjected to a barrage of racist abuse.

The incident took place between 6pm and 6.30pm on Thursday, 21 January.

A 26-year-old man is currently helping officers with their investigations.

But police are appealing for anyone who was on the train, the 1730 Aberystwyth to Birmingham New Street service, to come forward.

Investigating officer PC Dave Hall said: “The victim boarded the train at Aberystwyth and was joined at her seat by two men. Shortly into the journey, one of the men began making racist comments towards a group of Chinese passengers.

“At this point, the victim intervened. However, the man then turned his aggression towards her and she was subjected to a string of threats and racist abuse.

“The man involved used highly offensive, inflammatory and racist language which left the woman – and, no doubt, other passengers - feeling intimidated and deeply upset. This type of abhorrent behaviour is simply not acceptable.

“I would urge any passengers who were on the train on that day – especially between Machynlleth and Caersws - to please get in touch. You may have seen or heard something which could prove vital to our investigation.”

Witnesses are asked to call 0800 40 50 40 or text 61016 quoting log reference 175 of 03/02/2016. Information can also be passed to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
