A CONCERNED councillor is calling for “proactive action” before prominent sites in Porthmadog go to “rack and ruin”.

A number of buildings and sites in Porthmadog remain vacant with increasing concern from locals that the buildings will deteriorate if not maintained.

Speaking in front of fellow county councillors at a meeting in Caernarfon last week, Cllr Nia Jeffreys, who represents Porthmadog, asked: “What steps can Gwynedd Council take to ensure that developers who own land or buildings in Gwynedd look after their sites, keeping them tidy and safe?”

In a follow-up question Cllr Jeffreys asked about specific sites in Porthmadog including Capel Seion, The Old Mill and the former Coliseum site.

She drew attention to the need for proactive action on Ty Moelwyn.

Speaking after the meeting Cllr Jeffreys said: “It is vital that developers are good neighbours and that they respect local people.

“I pressed the council on Ty Moelwyn, which I was surprised to learn is owned by a company in Bermuda.

“This building must not be allowed to go to rack and ruin once the tax office closes.”

Tax office staff moved from Ty Moelwyn into Thedford House earlier this year and it is unclear what the future holds for their former offices.

The Coliseum cinema was demolished two years ago and despite rumours of development at the site, nothing has come to fruition to date.
