Ffestiniog Town Council publicly called for a People’s Vote on any withdrawal agreement from the European Union, with the option to remain included on the ballot paper.
The council also agreed to fly the European flag, alongside the Welsh flag, from its flagpole on Diffwys Square, until the UK’s relationship with the European Union has been resolved, so as to make clear that EU citizens are welcome here.
The motion was proposed by Cllr Rory Francis and was agreed without opposition.
Cllr Francis said: “I’m delighted that the town council backed this proposal last night. There’s real concern locally about the impact of a ‘No Deal’ Brexit, and I think it’s really important that everyone makes clear that this is unacceptable, and that no one voted to damage our economy and make the country poorer.”
The resolution says: “Ffestiniog Town Council recognises that leaving the European Union with no withdrawal agreement represents a huge threat to the jobs and security of local people, whether they work in agriculture, industry or the service sector. The town council notes that the Electoral Commission has reported Leave. EU to the National Crime Agency for multiple criminal offences, and that this seriously undermines the validity of the referendum result.”
