‘We must give priority to people of Ceredigion and not take any risks’, says councillor.

COUNCILLORS have called for an emergency meeting to discuss refugees coming to Aberystwyth in the light of the terrorist attacks in Paris on Friday.

The calls come after it emerged that one of the terrorists involved in the attacks, which left 129 people dead, could have been posing as a Syrian refugee who travelled north from Greece.

Cllr Dai Mason is calling on Cllr Ellen ap Gwynn, leader of Ceredigion County Council, which has agreed to rehouse 12 Syrian refugees directly from UN refugee camps, to convene a meeting of the special refugee task and finish group to discuss the issue.

He says in a letter to the leader: “Following the tragedy that happened in Paris this weekend, I hope that the special task and finish group [for refugees] will meet this week to discuss the situation in detail, especially that some of the terrorists had Syrian passports.

“We must give priority to the people of Ceredigion and not take any risks. On this matter, we should be taking the Prime Minister’s view of only taking refugees from the Syrian camps who have been vetted in detail.

“I am only asking the refugee task group to meet and discuss any risks - after last weekend - to the people of Aberystwyth and Ceredigion before going ahead with the plans.”
