CAMPAIGNERS protested outside the offices of Montgomeryshire MP Glyn Davies this week at his “appalling” voting record on child refugees and Brexit.
The Mid Wales Refugee Action group set up a “mini refugee camp” outside the MP’s Welshpool offices last Monday morning.
Following the protest, there was a community picnic with live music at Machynlleth Clock Tower to highlight and celebrate the contribution that migrants have made to the area.
The group said the protest had the dual aim of publicly opposing Mr Davies’ decisions to vote against giving EU citizens living in the UK the right to remain, and also his decision to oppose the Dubs Amendment.
The Dubs Amendment was a scheme to provide support and sanctuary to lone children fleeing war in Syria, which was controversially abandoned by the UK government just months after it was agreed in parliament.
Tegwen Brickley, spokesperson for Mid Wales Refugee Action, said: “Glyn Davies has an appalling track record — he voted against child refugees being allowed to enter the UK, leaving thousands of children desperately vulnerable to trafficking, sexual exploitation and death.”
The protest against Mr Davies’ stance on Europe was held under the banner of the ‘One Day Without Us’ national day of action, which aimed to highlight the contribution of EU citizens to the UK.
Mr Davies told the Cambrian News: “The Mid Wales Refugee Action Group staged a very polite and peaceful protest outside my constituency office, and raised issues which I mostly agree with.
“I too think Britain could take in more refugees displaced by conflict in the Middle East. However, I don’t agree that taking refugees from France is either the most effective or humanitarian option."
