A BATTLE is on to get a tourist information centre reopened in Porthmadog.
Earlier this year, Gwynedd Council made the decision to close its centres in Caernarfon, Porthmadog and Barmouth after a number of cuts in services due to lack of funding from the UK Government.
However, talks are now being held to see if Porthmadog’s TIC can be re-homed inside the Ganolfan.
Cllr Jason Humphreys, who is also a trustee of the Ganolfan, said: “It’s been a very difficult time for tourist information centre staff and I can only thank them for their dedicated work over the years.
“Even at this time of the year, which is low season, I’m aware that a number of tourists were calling into the community centre on Saturday instead because the tourist information centre was closed.
“In addition to being a county councillor, I am also a Ganolfan Trustee and am mindful of the need for a degree of confidentiality at this time.
“But I can confirm that discussions are taking place between Gwynedd Council, Y Ganolfan and a not-for-profit organisation.
"Following a meeting that I had with council officers on Friday, I am very hopeful of not only seeing a resumption in tourist information services at the same location, but also in developing a partnership that will benefit the community centre and its clients in the future.”
