A FURIOUS county councillor has blasted Gwynedd Council for continuing with its “harebrained” plans to close public toilets.

In recent weeks there has been public outcry about the potential closure of the facilities, not least a petition calling for the council to reverse its decision which has so far collected more than 1,750 signatures.

Plans to close specific toilets are being discussed by Gwynedd Council’s communities scrutiny committee this morning.

Of the 73 public toilets in the county, 50 will be closed unless town and community councils foot the bill to keep them open.

Long-time champion for public toilets, Llanegryn councillor Louise Hughes, is dismayed by the whole initiative.

“Only Gwynedd Council could make such a fatuous statement as ‘the decision to close will be based on the importance of the public toilets’,” she raged to the Cambrian News.

“When is a toilet ‘unimportant’ then? Even Gwynedd Council officers or Plaid Cymru portfolio holders would have to agree that, when you need to ‘go’ urgently, every public toilet is important.

“Given the amount of public opposition, I’m aghast that they’re even contemplating going ahead with the closures of any toilets.”
