TYWYN Town Council has agreed to purchase the town’s Victorian shelter, despite not knowing how much it will cost.
In November, the councillors enquired with Gwynedd Council about the availability of the seafront building and whether they could take responsibility of it “for the good of the town”.
The local authority informed Tywyn Town Council that they had three options; to offer a donation to Gwynedd Council for the building, to lease the shelter or to purchase the structure outright.
When asked about the cost of the building, Bedwyr Gwilym, Tywyn’s town clerk, replied “no money has been discussed but I suspect it would be around £1”.
Despite the lack of an actual cost, the town council voted resoundingly in favour of purchasing the shelter outright, with only Cllr Anne Lloyd Jones abstaining.
Before the decision was made, there was a degree of contention about the matter.
Cllr Mark Kendall expressed his dissatisfaction that the shelter had been donated to Tywyn in the first place and asked why the council had to pay anything at all.
