MACHYNLLETH faces the shock closure of a service introduced to soften the blow of losing its recycling centre last year, in another cost-cutting move by Powys council.

The council closed the popular Potters Yard in Machynlleth in January 2015 after arguing that at £230,000 to £430,000 a year, it was “too expensive” to run, leaving residents aghast at having to travel to Aberystwyth to reach their nearest centre.

In a compromise move, a Saturday service was introduced at the Maengwyn car park for residents following the closure of Potters Yard, but the council now wants to axe that too - a report has recommended.

Cllr Michael Williams called the plan “ridiculous” and “disgraceful”.

“This service was promised to the people of Machynlleth after the closure of Potters Yard which caused great concern,” Cllr Williams said.

“This is a disgraceful way to treat people here and is another backwards step for the people of Machynlleth and the Dyfi Valley.

“The service is very well used and residents took to it after the shock at Potters’ closure, so closing this aswell is absolute nonsense.

“I certainly will be speaking against such a ridiculous proposal.”
