CEREDIGION council stands to get only £150,000 if it sells its office in Cardigan — three years after spending £200,000 on renovations.
Councillors on a scrutiny committee are angry over a Cabinet decision to sell off the Morgan Street office and rent an additional floor of Canolfan Teifi, where the town library is currently based.
They say the decision was made despite not having enough information and should be reconsidered by the full council, before a final Cabinet decision.
Backbench councillors had criticised Cabinet members for agreeing to a recommendation to sell the Morgan Street office and move services to Canolfan Teifi.
Cllr Gethin James and Cllr Mark Cole insisted there were no financial details about the changes or whether the proposal would meet planning regulations.
It emerged at the scrutiny committee meeting that moving services to Canolfan Teifi and selling Morgan Street would actually cost between £8,000 and £10,000 more each year than the current situation.
Cllr James said he was astounded that the Morgan Street office was being valued at £150,000 for sale, a loss of £50,000 on the money spent on renovations three years ago.
A council spokesperson said: “The figure suggested of £8,000 to £10,000 per annum does not take into account efficiency savings associated with relocating staff to one central building in Cardigan.
“Nor does this figure reflect the fact that additional staff that operate from the current Cardigan Hospital building will need to be relocated in the near future."
