A new face will join the ranks of Gwynedd’s county councillors after being elected unopposed.

Plaid Cymru candidate Gareth Tudor Morris Jones was elected to represent the Morfa Nefyn ward after no other candidates had presented their names by the 4pm cut-off last Thursday.

The seat had been vacated following the resignation of Siân Wyn Hughes last month due to personal reasons.

She had been elected in a July 2015 by-election as a result of the ward’s previous councillor, Liz Saville Roberts, being elected as the Plaid Cymru MP for Dwyfor Meirionnydd.

The uncontested election of Cllr Jones means that Plaid Cymru continues to maintain a solid majority on the 75-member authority, holding 41 seats and able to govern on their own.

Following Cllr Jones’ election, he was congratulated by one of his predecessors.

“I am exceptionally proud to present Gareth as the next county councillor for Morfa Nefyn and Edern,” said Mrs Saville Roberts.

“He is already well known to many people in the ward as the former headteacher of Ysgol Botwnnog, but I am prouder still that this area will be represented by a man who knows, loves and understands the region and people.

“He is a man who will hold himself to account to the highest principles.”
