A SPAT erupted between two Gwynedd councillors at a meeting of town council this week.
Cllr Anne Lloyd Jones and Cllr Mike Stevens had a heated exchange regarding Cllr Stevens’ recent meeting with HSBC banking officials following their decision to close down the town’s penultimate bank branch.
Cllr Lloyd Jones was perturbed that town councillor John Pughe was at the meeting “representing the town council” although no vote had been taken on the matter in any town council meeting.
She said: “I was surprised to see that Cllr Pughe was at the meeting and the e-mail I had stated he was there as the town council’s representative.
“I’ve checked the minutes and I don’t see where we asked John Pughe to represent us.
“I have no problem with Cllr Pughe acting on our behalf but only if he had been nominated for the role.”
Cllr Pughe quickly explained how he was not at the meeting on behalf of the town council but was there to support his “good friend” Cllr Stevens.
Cllr Stevens retorted to Cllr Lloyd Jones’ comment.
“You’ve got completely the wrong end of the stick, you’re making a tizz of this and I’ve no idea why,” he said.
“As Gwynedd councillor I have a mandate to do things to safeguard the interests of Tywyn and I don’t have to have your permission to do so.
“I invited Cllr John Pughe because I knew he would battle for the town.”
