The mayor of Cardigan says the campaign for Welsh independence is not about creating division, but ‘about celebrating the country’s unique place in the world and becoming a proper part of the international family of nations’.

Cllr Shan Williams forecast that Brexit would spell the end of the Union, leaving Wales having to decide on whether to become independent or ‘be submerged into England with even less say than we currently do’.

She was commenting after Cardigan Town Council voted unanimously to back the cause of Welsh independence last week.

“After generations of Westminster rule it has been ingrained in our mindsets that we are ‘too small’ or ‘too poor’ to even dream of being an independent nation,” she told the Cambrian News, following the meeting.

“Some of the most prosperous, most equal, and happiest countries in the world are small nations, and even smaller than us.

“In Europe alone there are a total of 18 independent nations with a smaller population than Wales.

“Secondly, it is precisely because of Westminster that we are ‘poor’.

“Of course, independence wouldn’t automatically make Wales wealthier. However, the Welsh Government would have the set of economic tools and the power that it doesn’t currently have."

She added: “Welsh MPs make up six per cent of the House of Commons. In general elections, no matter how Wales votes, we get the Westminster Government that England wants."

“Surely, it’s natural that decisions about Wales should be made in Wales? Independence is normal” she said.
