TYWYN Town Council has spent over £4,000 modifying its mayoral chain.
The decision to buy a new 27-link inner chain, which would attach to the current chain, was castigated by Cllr Quentin Deakin in June after he felt the proposed £3,000 needed to complete the work could be better spent elsewhere.
The outraged councillor suggested the town council could finance car park repairs with the money or keep public toilets open.
“I’m not going to sit here and pretend it’s okay to spend £3,000 on a chain,” said Cllr Deakin at the time.
However at this month’s town council meeting, the final bill for the new chain - plus additional work to refinish the existing silver sterling gilt with polished hard gold - was announced as £4,086.91 (including VAT).
The money for the new chain is to be deducted from the council’s ‘donations budget’.
The council agreed to accept the information as it was presented to them.
