DWYFOR Meirionnydd MP Liz Saville Roberts has called on the UK Government to acknowledge Welsh national identity on registration forms.
Mrs Saville Roberts believes people in Wales should be allowed to record their Welsh national identity on electoral registration forms, calling the inability to do so under the current system an out-dated archaism.
Speaking in a Westminster Hall recent debate on government changes to voter registration, Mrs Saville Roberts expressed her concern that young voters will also lose out under the new system.
Under the new system, individual members of every household will have to register to vote, replacing household registration, where previously one member of the household took responsibility for their dependents. The Morfa Nefyn MP has called on the government to revisit the plans and allow more time for the system to bed-in before it is used.
Mrs Saville Roberts said: “The government should also take this opportunity to commit to ensuring people can record their nationality as Welsh on registration forms."
