MARK Williams MP has called for government action to change how it introduces changes to women’s pensions, giving his backing to the country-wide Women against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) campaign.
To coincide with International Women’s Day Mr Williams addressed a gathering of WASPI campaigners who had travelled to Parliament to demonstrate against the government’s decision not to introduce transitional changes to women’s pensions.
Over 135,000 women in Wales are due to lose out on thousands of pounds as a result of the changes, with campaigners having fought against these proposed changes for many years.
Mr Williams said: “I am wholeheartedly supportive of this campaign, which is based on fighting injustice, something which women have all too often had to endure.
“The government’s unwillingness to look at this issue again and adopt suggestions for transitional introductions for pension changes is causing untold misery to women across Ceredigion, Wales and indeed the UK as a whole.
“We are not asking for the changes to be scrapped, but for a transitional change to avoid severe hardship and damage to families across our country.
“I am very encouraged by the amount of women who have come along today to fight against this injustice and both the Welsh Liberal Democrats and I remain firmly behind you as this campaign continues."
