The MPs for Dwyfor Meirionnydd and Arfon have paid tribute to the exceptional courage of holocaust survivors and endorsed the need for tolerance and respect as Parliament prepares to mark 77 years since the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp.

Holocaust Memorial Day is marked annually in January to remember the six million Jews murdered during World War II, and the millions of others killed under Nazi persecution and subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, and Bosnia.

The theme for this year’s commemorations is ‘One Day’, and it will be marked this Thursday, 27 January.

Both MPs have also supported a parliamentary motion paying tribute to the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust for organising the national Holocaust Memorial Day event.

Commenting ahead of the event, MPs Liz Saville Roberts and Hywel Williams said: “Holocaust Memorial Day is a strong reminder that the fight against prejudice and intolerance must never cease.

“It’s an important opportunity to remember both victims and survivors and to make sure that they are not forgotten.

“With every year that passes, voices from those dark days grow fewer.

“That is why it is incumbent on us all to keep the flame of hope alive and challenge antisemitism, prejudice and bigotry in all its forms.

“This year we will be marking Holocaust Memorial Day at home, and we hope our constituents will join with us to reflect on the tragic events of the Holocaust and subsequent genocides.

“No matter what our beliefs, colour or nationality, the culture of respect is one we should have for everybody and it’s important that we as a community come together to show solidarity.”
