A FURIOUS Gwynedd councillor has blasted the local authority for threatening to close a vital public toilet next to a council-owned car park in Aberdyfi which rakes in a six-figure sum every few months.

Dewi Owen has criticised the county council for suggesting it could have to close the village’s public conveniences because of a shortage of funds, even though the adjacent public car park raised £144,000 in a little over six months.

The councillor is concerned about the damage closing the toilet would have on Aberdyfi’s smaller businesses, some of which do not have washroom facilities of their own and rely on the public toilet, and also the negative effect the closure would be likely to have on visitor numbers.

Cllr Owen also felt the whole situation surrounding public toilets in Gwynedd had been mishandled.

In response, a Gwynedd Council spokesperson said: “In relation to public toilets, the council’s cabinet has recently proposed that Gwynedd Council enter into partnership arrangements with community councils which, if accepted by all, would mean avoiding closing any public conveniences."
