DWYFOR Meirionnydd MP Liz Saville Roberts has forced a vote in the House of Commons on passing responsibility over policing to the Welsh Government.

Mrs Saville Roberts, Plaid Cymru’s Home Affairs spokesperson, pushed for an amendment to the Policing and Crime Bill to devolve policing and allow the Welsh Government, rather than Westminster, to set policing priorities for Wales.

The call comes following the release of a new Wales Bill that proposes to reserve Welsh policing as a matter for Westminster, making Wales the only devolved nation without control over policing.

The cross-party Silk Commission, which led to the publication of the Wales Bill, recommended the devolution of policing.

Mrs Saville Roberts said: “Wales is the only country in the UK that does not have responsibility for its police forces.

"Both Scotland and Northern Ireland are able to set their own distinct priorities for their respective police forces but Wales is forced to follow the policing priorities of England."
