PROTESTERS will hold a vigil outside the office of MP Mark Williams this evening, Wednesday, in a last-ditch attempt to persuade him to vote against air strikes on ISIS targets in Syria.

The announcement comes after Liberal Democrat leader, Tim Farron revealed this morning that the party’s position was to vote for air strikes in Syria in order to help defeat ISIS, and called on his colleagues to follow his lead.

Hosted by Julie Makin of Aberaid, the ‘Don’t Bomb Syria Vigil’ will be held between 5pm and 6pm outside the Ceredigion MP’s offices on North Parade, Aberystwyth.

Protesters will call on Mr Williams to “defy his party” and vote against air strikes.

Mr Williams did not respond when asked by the Cambrian News which way he would be voting.

Ms Makin told the Cambrian News: “From what Mark has said in the past, I believe he is against air strikes so we will just try and encourage him to vote with his conscience.

“A number of us feel that in letters, responses and in talking to him through Aberaid, that he would be against it.

“We are hoping this vigil will send him a message.”

Penparcau councillor, Talat Chaudhri, who also intends to attend the vigil, said: “I have read the Liberal Democrat position this morning and they appear to be up for it.

“They give a reasoned case for air strikes but they admit the outcome is very uncertain.

“My position is that the case has not been made for war for the simple reason there is no plan to secure the peace afterwards, and no evidence that the ground troops are on our side.

“It is as fake as the case made for weapons of mass destruction in the 2003 Iraq War.”
