Climate activists have protested against a “farcical” plan for a new overtaking lane in Llanidloes.

Around a dozen people gathered near the Llanidloes roundabout on the A470, on Saturday, 29 January, to demonstrate against a planned overtaking lane on the road, which is currently paused while being considered by the Roads Review panel.

They also displayed messages of support for the Welsh Government and their independent roads review panel, which has frozen and is currently reviewing any road projects that could increase Wales’ carbon emissions.

The Welsh Government is proposing to introduce a new overtaking lane from the Llanidloes roundabout in the northbound direction along the A470 towards Caersws. This would provide 250 metres of formal overtaking opportunity via an extra lane for northbound drivers, to pass slower moving vehicles safely.

The Welsh Government said they “expect a decision soon” on whether it will go ahead.

The Llanidloes demonstrators were a mix of both local Extinction Rebellion activists and Hafren Terrace residents who are worried about the potential for noise and pollution from the planned overtaking lane encroaching on their homes.

Extinction Rebellion activist David France said: “It is farcical to be building more roads in 2022. Rather than reducing congestion, decades of expansion has demonstrated that more roads simply equals more cars.

“The UK Government are completely ignoring their own advisers when it comes to road building, putting the profits of big companies and the super-rich above the health of normal people and the future of the planet.

“On the other hand, it’s refreshing to hear Welsh Government promises for world-leading transport policies. It makes me proud to be Welsh. I won’t get complacent though, and will keep pushing against road building and for better alternatives, like public transport, active travel and car sharing.”
