CONTROVERSIAL plans have been suggested to scrap Dolgellau’s skatepark and replace it with bus stops.
Cllr Ray Stubbs has proposed removing the the town’s skate equipment and installing new bus stops in the town centre away from Eldon Square.
The location of where the town’s buses should stop and wait has been the subject of much debate in Dolgellau over recent months, especially after an elderly woman was knocked over by a reversing bus in the square at the end of August.
Cllr Stubbs told a town council meeting: “My plan, crude as it is, is to get the buses to stop in the leisure centre car park.
“There people would be able to stay safe and the square would be far less crowded.
“To create the space – and this is only my opinion, nothing set in stone – we could get rid of the skatepark.
“We could offer the equipment to another community or we could scrap it and use the money to buy bus shelters. It’s just an idea I had.”
Several councillors suggested they were against the proposal and would not want to lose any recreation facilities in town.
“I totally disagree with Cllr Stubbs and would not want the park to close,” said Cllr Linda Morgan.
