Porthmadog Football Club has vowed to name a new stand after its well-known director who died just before Christmas.

The club’s new main stand will be named after Dafydd Wyn Jones, who was a financial director at the club for 23 years.

Mr Jones died on 20 December, aged 71.

The club has set up a JustGiving page to raise money for the new stand.

A target of £20,000 has been set and, at the time of publication, over £500 had been raised.

The club plans to start building the stand when the current season comes to a close.

Chris Jones, a director at the football club, said Mr Jones “had so many visions for the club, one of these being a new main stand”.

“It’s something which has been in the pipeline for a while,” Chris Jones said.

“[There’s] No better way to deliver [than] by naming the stand after him.

“Dafydd’s family have been very supportive of it. They kindly gave all donations collected at the funeral to the football club. That will be going towards the new stand.”

He added: “It has been a difficult period for the club, but we have acted quickly. We want to show that we are positive and building on Dafydd’s vision.”

Chairman of the club, Phil Jones, said Dafydd “meant everything to the club”.

“So much of the ground exists because of him,” he said.

“The least we could do was to build a new main stand. We couldn’t think of anything more permanent.

“It’s also practical, which Dafydd would have wanted.

“We want it to be a permanent fixture in the ground for at least 50 years. His name will be on it. It will hopefully sit at least 300 people and it will be a quality, fitting tribute to him.”

Phil added: “The club has been active. We have new board members. Dafydd would have loved to be around these new and enthusiastic members.”
