WI

THE monthly meeting of Porthmadog Women’s Institute was held on Monday, 4 July in Y Ganolfan. Eifiona Williams welcomed members and asked them to stand to remember Gwenda Charles who had recently died. A card expressing their sympathy had been received from Tremadog WI. Best wishes were also sent to Sulwen Thomas who had been taken to hospital. Then, after welcoming guest Mrs L Van Gucci, the minutes were read. WaterAid had written to thank the institute for their generous donation following the talk last month by Katharine Dobson. Morfa Bychan WI had also invited members to their meeting and a talk by a representative from Wiltshire Farm Foods. The county letter was also read, and in the matters arising a questionnaire about members’ experiences of doctors’ surgeries was completed and a discussion held on views on the proposed closure of public toilets. Finally it was time for the speaker, Ken Robinson who gave members an interesting talk on the history of the Cambrian Coast Railway from Pwllheli to Dovey Junction. His slides brought out the many changes that had been made to the line, the engines, the surrounding areas in the years since 1940 and brought out the beauty of the area as the train travelled from the mountains and along the coast. Margaret Harrison gave the vote of thanks and commented how interesting it had been with some amazing pictures such as the one of a steam train being coaled up by dropping the coal over the wall from a bridge and onto the tender on the tracks below. The tea hostesses were Margaret Bromley and Eifiona Williams, assisted by Eve Price. The next meeting will take place on Monday, 5 September, when Rhys Mwyn will be the speaker.
