Madam,

I write regarding your report of the proposed removal of post office counters and the understandable concern regarding disabled and elderly access.

In view of these proposals, would it not be a good opportunity for the council to purchase the post office building in Great Darkgate Street, Aberystwyth, together with the old parcels area behind? The post office façade on Great Darkgate Street could be kept and a multi-storey car park built behind it, with disabled parking on the ground floor plus a few spaces for Chalybeate Street shop owners. A lift could serve the upper floors and this would give shoppers direct access onto Great Darkgate Street via the main post office door.

I realise this would probably mean demolishing and rehousing Olly’s in order to create in/out access for vehicles and also the implementation of a one-way system, but, surely, this could be achieved in order to being much-needed accessibility to the town centre which would result in extra foot-fall and boost struggling town centre businesses. It would bring life back into the town.

Yours etc
